Missing Mom

I thought she would be around much longer. Sometimes life throws you an unexpected curve.

The initial shock leaves one in a state of disbelief as you continue to pick up the pieces of her life left behind.

Some of us have gone through this experience. You’re left with a hole in your life that a mothers love will no longer be able to fill.

Sometimes on my way to work I would reach for the phone to call her as we talked about any and everything.

Now she is no longer here…..

Almost one year ago, I lost my mom due to a ruptured aneurism. She was 87 years old and went home to meet the lord.

This first Mothers day without her is difficult and weighing very heavily on my mind.

We were mom and daughter but we were also best friends.

She was special strong and full of spirit. A prayer warrior, mom was always praying for our family and others who had their battles.

Her death took our family by surprise because the symptoms showed up unexpectedly. She died within a week.

There is a lesson to be learned as we go through our life experiences.

Never take your mom for granted. Thank her and let her know how much she’s loved and appreciated because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

This Mothers day I would like to honor all the mother’s who work hard to take care of their families.

For those whose lost their moms, remember the good memories you shared.

Mom I miss you and you will always be in my heart.

What makes you feel alive?

Have you figured out what makes you really feel alive? Feeling alive is about feeling alert, active and passionate about the life you are living. Maybe you are on automatic pilot with everyday life while forgetting what it means to be alive. Feeling alive is not merely just existing.

leio-mclaren-307277Sometimes we need to take a step back to refuel and assess the life we are living. We are so inundated with trying to make a living and taking care of our families that we forget what it means to really be alive.

The last couple of years has been a little rough so I can honestly say I was guilty of living a life that lacked any luster. Sometimes life experiences can knock you off your feet. When you finally get up, you realize you’ve been in a zombie like state going through the motions but not really living.

costa-rica-318904_1280This year, I was fortunate to be able to go on two separate vacations. One in Central America and the other in the Caribbean. I was blessed and for the first time in a very long time, I had more clarity about the life I want to live. Being in a tropical environment and connecting to nature made me feel so alive that I may consider making it my future home.

What makes me feel alive is living a simpler life and shedding all the stuff which we believe will make us happy. I was fortunate to meet  several people on my journey who were more contented with a lot less. They are not living in bondage married to things. Their concern is more about surviving, feeling alive while living for today.

What makes you feel alive?

It’s different for everyone and can be as simple as listening to your favorite music. At times laughing at a comedy show. Taking time out to refuel and distress while taking a walk or going on a hike through a forest. Exerting energy makes one feel alive. Maybe you love to go dancing, watching raindrops fall on a rainy day or going out to eat at your favorite restaurants with good friends. I love singing and dancing to my favorite tunes. Whatever your definition of feeling alive, it’s what makes life more enjoyable.

262H (1)Being alive means literally that you’re not dead. Sometimes we live like the walking dead rather than the undead, consumed by our negative thoughts and emotions about the life we are living. Maybe its time to reflect and consider a life more engaging with what makes us feel more human.  What really matters is the quality of life, not the quantity of what we have which weighs us down like an anchor on a boat.

Challenge your thinking and find different ways to feel more alive. This is what living is all about, implementing small changes, taking risks, in order to increase the feeling of being more alive.

A new adventure

20170715_151858I haven’t had a Saturday off in weeks but this past Saturday, I finally had the opportunity to explore a new town not too far from my home. My friend has been encouraging me to check it out for such a long time. So I decided to take a leap of faith and drove to this new location with my daughter. This was our day to spend some quality time together. Both our schedules have been out of whack lately so we made a decision to escape towards a new adventure. The name of the town is New Hope in Pennsylvania near the Delaware River.

20170715_151743It was a humid sunny and hot day. Maybe a little too warm for my taste. The heat has been excruciating this summer and that day will probably go down in history as another scorcher. When it’s not raining like it has been on a regular basis lately, the sun is blazing. By the way, I thought rain was supposed to cool our temperature down. It feels of late it’s going higher or am I just imagining the intense heat,

As we approached the town, we caught glimpses of the Delaware river on our left and beautiful houses on our right. We drove down Main Street where we observed several restaurants and small businesses. There was plenty of metered parking on the street however we decided to park in an all day lot.

In the middle of the town, a small house was designated for visitors where we were able to get a map, booklets, and pamphlets about the town and surrounding area. If one wanted to take a ride on the Delaware river, there was also a small ferry available which will take you on a small tour up and down the river. So much to do and so little time.

I was so glad we wore comfortable shoes as there was quite a bit of walking but so worth it. There were museums to satisfy everyone’s taste and small shops with various types of merchandise. As we went door to door looking at jewelry, clothing, and other paraphernalia, we happened to purchase some items at relatively good prices. But don’t be fooled, there were also quite a few high-end stores. If you’re on a budget, beware or bring some extra money if you want to spend a little more.

A  small bridge connects New Hope Pennsylvania to Lambertsville New Jersey We walked to the other side where we got a better view of the Delaware River. If you have a taste for antiques and additional shopping, you’ll find it here.

We slipped into a small coffee shop which also sold ice cream in order to get a break from the heat. My daughter ordered mint chocolate chip and I ordered buttered pecan. What a treat after a nice day. It was extremely refreshing and delicious.

Beautiful flowers were arranged in unison by a sidewalk. Crowds of people everywhere enjoying the moment. We were so glad we had the opportunity to spend the day together.

20170715_153330After walking around Lambertsville, we went back to New Hope and stopped at a few more stores where we made additional purchases. Our finale was at a popular restaurant named Havana where we sat an ordered a refreshing drink and ate some appetizers.

In the future, I intend to come back to New Hope. If you have the opportunity to discover new places near your home, spend it with someone special and build memories that will last a lifetime.

Can you recommend any places near where you live?

Rough Times

When the storms of life are raging

“When it rains, it pours.” Lately I’ve been going through a lot of downers. I felt like I took a wrong turn and life was moving in the wrong direction. My mom was in the hospital, but thank God she recovered. Now dad just had a major procedure and is now recuperating. I thank God for his blessings through these difficult time.

Taking a Deep breath

When your parents are at a certain age, every time the phone rings, you breathe deeply and pray for good news. What makes it more difficult is their location in another country. At the same time I was experiencing some other personal crisis. Dear lord, what are you trying to teach me through all this pain?

Gaining strength in rough times

Why do we go through rough times? I am not quite sure of the answer. But my mom who is a prayer warrior believes through the tough times, we are being refined like silver. Having had many of these moments over the course of my life, I believe there is a lesson to be learned in everything we experience in our life.

When you get through the tough times, you realize you are stronger having gone through the fire. We are designed to go through our battles rather than going around it. As we are told in a popular song,” Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

I have just experienced several weeks of a living hell and I can tell you, I am a survivor. Thank God my parents are well. However, the other personal issues I alluded to is going to take time. I believe God will get me through it as he has helped me so many times in the past.

I pray faithfully for God’s blessings, and I ask that he help you when your storms of life are raging. Be strong and believe, he will get you through it. Press on and go through the storms knowing their are sunny days ahead.

Nugget of Truth: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Romans 12:12

Prayer, patience and hope will help you through tough times.

Real Life

img_0886

It was a crisp night in the month of October. My daughter left work late in the evening, from her job at the mall. As she approached her car, tired after a long day at work, key in hand, she was more than ready to go home to relax. Suddenly she heard a faint sound coming from the vicinity of her car.

Curious as to where the sound was coming from, she stooped down to look under and around the car. Yet in the dark of the night, it was difficult to see anything. As she continued to search, the squeaky sound continued. This time she laid flat on the ground to peek under the car. The faint sound was coming from the front area on the driver’s side.  As she looked intently, there in the dark near the front wheel were two little eyes staring at her. It was a tiny kitten, no more than 5 weeks old, lost and shivering in the dark, hungry and cold. He looked like he’d been on his own for quite a while and was a little afraid. So she gently picked him up, and placed him in her car.

fullsizerOut of all the cars that were left in the parking lot, what were the chances this kitten would end up under her car?  I believe everything happens for a reason. So she called some of her friends who has cats, in order to get him some food, toys, and a litter box. She decided to name him Oliver and brought him home where he would have food and shelter for the evening.

The next day, she made some calls to a couple of shelters and unfortunately, she was told she can only place Oliver in the town where he was found. After exhausting her options, she decided to find a warm and loving home for this little kitten herself.

Remember when I started this story, I said it was not about pets. It’s a real life story of love and compassion for one of God’s creatures. My daughter loves animals and if it wasn’t for my allergic reaction to cats, she would have found some way to keep him. For one week, I have seen her deep commitment and affectionate love for this kitten. Her motivation and desire was to find Oliver a warm, loving, and happy home. When her friends were unable to keep him, she turned to my son pleadingly to help her find him a home. He was successful and now Oliver is living with a loving family who loves cats. They were so excited and after seeing their connection with Oliver, I know he’s in a happy home.

I believe God placed this cat in the hands of my daughter because He knew it would get the proper care, after stumbling around for who knows how long. Love comes in many forms and this time, love for a small kitten who felt lonely, hungry, and helpless fell into the arms of someone who really cared.

I thank God for having a daughter who is so loving and compassionate towards His creatures. May we all have such love when we come across God’s helpless animals.

Autumn Dawns

fall

Splashes of colors of falling leaves,

on a cool breezy day

Autumn dawns

Leaves in vibrant colors

Cinnamon, paprika, tangerine and curry

Gliding gently to the ground below

Autumn dawns

Large trees of oak, walnut and more

Stands proudly ushering the colors of a new season

Decorated by the hands of our creator

Autumn dawns

The smells of apple cider and pumpkin pies

October and November

Reflections of a new beginning

Representing a season of color and change

Autumn dawns

God in all his magnificence, wisdom and Glory

His provision for mankind

Is forever visible through nature

Autumn dawns.
