What makes you feel alive?

Have you figured out what makes you really feel alive? Feeling alive is about feeling alert, active and passionate about the life you are living. Maybe you are on automatic pilot with everyday life while forgetting what it means to be alive. Feeling alive is not merely just existing.

leio-mclaren-307277Sometimes we need to take a step back to refuel and assess the life we are living. We are so inundated with trying to make a living and taking care of our families that we forget what it means to really be alive.

The last couple of years has been a little rough so I can honestly say I was guilty of living a life that lacked any luster. Sometimes life experiences can knock you off your feet. When you finally get up, you realize you’ve been in a zombie like state going through the motions but not really living.

costa-rica-318904_1280This year, I was fortunate to be able to go on two separate vacations. One in Central America and the other in the Caribbean. I was blessed and for the first time in a very long time, I had more clarity about the life I want to live. Being in a tropical environment and connecting to nature made me feel so alive that I may consider making it my future home.

What makes me feel alive is living a simpler life and shedding all the stuff which we believe will make us happy. I was fortunate to meet  several people on my journey who were more contented with a lot less. They are not living in bondage married to things. Their concern is more about surviving, feeling alive while living for today.

What makes you feel alive?

It’s different for everyone and can be as simple as listening to your favorite music. At times laughing at a comedy show. Taking time out to refuel and distress while taking a walk or going on a hike through a forest. Exerting energy makes one feel alive. Maybe you love to go dancing, watching raindrops fall on a rainy day or going out to eat at your favorite restaurants with good friends. I love singing and dancing to my favorite tunes. Whatever your definition of feeling alive, it’s what makes life more enjoyable.

262H (1)Being alive means literally that you’re not dead. Sometimes we live like the walking dead rather than the undead, consumed by our negative thoughts and emotions about the life we are living. Maybe its time to reflect and consider a life more engaging with what makes us feel more human.  What really matters is the quality of life, not the quantity of what we have which weighs us down like an anchor on a boat.

Challenge your thinking and find different ways to feel more alive. This is what living is all about, implementing small changes, taking risks, in order to increase the feeling of being more alive.

Who is leading the charge?

horses

Who is leading the charge of mankind into battle? The battle for our hearts and minds have been going on for centuries. There is so much hatred in our world today against mother, brother, sister, and friends. Who or what is leading this charge? What are we watching and listening to which shifts our consciousness from love to hatred. Think about it, for in the beginning we were united in love from the first human beings, Adam and Eve. Now we are divided, misled and deceived by the world around us which is constantly changing. So, who is leading this charge of wars, greed by our corporations and deception by our politicians? Life at a Glance

Are you living the life you were meant to live? These are Photos taken on the Island of Dominica. I recently spent two weeks on this island and I was inspired by its natural beauty.

20170526_135530 I was born here many years ago and came to America at the age of two. To be honest, I have visited Dominica, several years ago, but this time seemed so different. The mountains seemed larger covered from top to bottom with coconut, bamboo, and other trees which are indigenous to this island. As I looked at the sky, the color was bluer than blue. You can also smell the freshness of the Atlantic and Caribbean Ocean. The colors of the flowers, plants and trees had an intensity I hadn’t noticed before. Beautiful homes in colors of bright orange, yellow and greens added a wonderful dimension to the landscape.

As I observed everything around me, I was amazed I hadn’t payed much attention in previous trips to this island. Why was this time so different? Then I realized I was older and looked at life very different from my younger days. I no longer took life for granted but embraced each day as if it was my last.

I met people who had given up their busy life in their perspective countries for a much slower and simpler life in Dominica. I pondered about my life and wondered if I had what it takes to change my current lifestyle, for life in a smaller country. What we give up is all the stuff we’ve accumulated over the years and certain amenities that smaller countries can’t provide.

Are we living the life we were meant to live? Sometimes I wonder because since childhood, our life has become more complicated as we continue to chase the almighty dollar.  Was this what God had in mind when he placed us here on earth? If I remember correctly, he placed us in the Garden of Eden, a paradise similar to the island of Dominica but much, much better. I guess I will hold these thoughts captive and contemplate what I should do in the coming years.

When it comes to you, my suggestion if you are not interested in moving to any other country in the future, at least make time to connect with nature no matter where you are. It will make a world of difference when considering the life you are living.

Rough Times

When the storms of life are raging

“When it rains, it pours.” Lately I’ve been going through a lot of downers. I felt like I took a wrong turn and life was moving in the wrong direction. My mom was in the hospital, but thank God she recovered. Now dad just had a major procedure and is now recuperating. I thank God for his blessings through these difficult time.

Taking a Deep breath

When your parents are at a certain age, every time the phone rings, you breathe deeply and pray for good news. What makes it more difficult is their location in another country. At the same time I was experiencing some other personal crisis. Dear lord, what are you trying to teach me through all this pain?

Gaining strength in rough times

Why do we go through rough times? I am not quite sure of the answer. But my mom who is a prayer warrior believes through the tough times, we are being refined like silver. Having had many of these moments over the course of my life, I believe there is a lesson to be learned in everything we experience in our life.

When you get through the tough times, you realize you are stronger having gone through the fire. We are designed to go through our battles rather than going around it. As we are told in a popular song,” Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

I have just experienced several weeks of a living hell and I can tell you, I am a survivor. Thank God my parents are well. However, the other personal issues I alluded to is going to take time. I believe God will get me through it as he has helped me so many times in the past.

I pray faithfully for God’s blessings, and I ask that he help you when your storms of life are raging. Be strong and believe, he will get you through it. Press on and go through the storms knowing their are sunny days ahead.

Nugget of Truth: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Romans 12:12

Prayer, patience and hope will help you through tough times.

High Heel Pumps

From Merillon ave to Penn Station New York

A little bit of vanity can skew your thinking in order to conform to the trends in society. I remember walking to the train station in high heel pumps in order to catch an early train from Merillon ave to Penn Station New York. My feet were strong in those days, and I never stopped to consider the consequences.  I tried to look as cute as can be in my pointy toes high heels pumps which were a couple of inches off the ground. I worked in the Fashion Industry, and Seventh Avenue, was my destination.

Following the Crowd

I was following the crowd, rushing to and from work without contemplating the result and discomfort of walking in high heel pumps. At that time, it was about walking in style and being in fashion. Who would have thought I would trade in high heel pumps for a pair of sneakers.

A Rude Awakening

One morning as I was walking in those high heel pumps, crowds of people were walking in unison to work. As we were all ready to cross on 34th street,  down I went in the middle of the street. Ouch! I turned around and got up quickly to regain my composure. Of course, not one person turned around to help me. People were in a zombie like state and was following their own agenda.  Years later, I laugh about that experience and thank God I wasn’t seriously hurt. My pride was a little bruised and that was more than enough.  I had a rude awakening about following the trends set in society.

From High heel Pumps to Sneakers

After that day, I traded my high heel pumps, and I started wearing sneakers in order to go to and from work. I didn’t care about the trends, but walking and being in comfort. That was the day I did a complete round about. I started thinking differently about the life I was living and figured out what benefited my lifestyle.

High heel pumps is a metaphor for in this article in reference to how we respond to life happenings everyday. Are you comfortable in your own shoes? Or are you ready to trade in your pair for a pair that sets your own trend?

Lessons Learned

I learned several important lesson that day:

  • It doesn’t pay to look cute if your comfort is at stake.
  • You have to think for yourself and not be a crowd pleaser.
  • Trends come and go and just because it’s a trend, it doesn’t mean you have to follow society’s way of thinking.
  • Set your own trends, be yourself and find out what works for you in all aspects of life
  • Sometimes, you’re on your own, as you look around for a helping hand. Don’t despair, get up dust yourself off and keep moving forward.
  • It’s ok to trade in High Heel Pumps for sneakers even if its only to and from work.
  • It’s all about finding remedies for the choices we make in life otherwise “we will reap whatever we sow.”
