I’ve asked myself this question many times throughout my life and I am perplexed at the answer. I believe God created us for specific reasons, and I know one of my spiritual gifts is to encourage those that God has placed in my path who needs uplifting in their time of need. However, I often wonder why me and why this particular spiritual gift? Nevertheless, I believe that’s how God designed us in order to help others. If we’re too busy focusing on ourselves, how can we help those in need?
Why Not Me?
After researching my gift of exhortation, I learned why I react to people who talk to me about hurtful matters in their life. Exhortation means to come along side of someone with words of encouragement, comfort and consolation. Sometimes, I can become so passionate and ready to give people encouragement and friendly advice in order to help them through their personal situation. It feels so natural and I’m happy to share and encourage others. Therefore, why not me when its part of who I am.
Many times throughout my life, I have felt overwhelmed trying to encourage others through their personal dilemmas. We all have problems we have to deal with and to be honest, I also have a lot piled on my plate. Somehow, my God uses some of those experiences to counsel and help those he’s placed in my path. It’s a labor of love more than anything else at times. It keeps me focused on what really is important in this life. I’m passionate when helping and giving of myself to others in spite of my own circumstances. I now understand, when God gives you a gift, it’s not something you hold onto, it’s something you have to share or give away. That’s why it’s considered a gift. We all have different spiritual gifts that was meant to help human kind whether its helps, teaching, giving, leadership and so on.
One of my closest friends I met several years ago went through difficult experiences during her lifetime. Her mother died of cancer and she found it very hard to cope. Then her father, a year later was also diagnosed with cancer. Feeling overwhelmed and distressed, she turned to me for encouragement and prayers. We spent a lot of time together as I tried to counsel her through her particular situation. Then she was diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t let go of the disharmony in her life. Later on, one week after her father died, she also passed away after battling cancer for more than one year. I thank God I was able to be part of her life during her personal struggles. Not only did I try to encourage her through those storms, but I also learned about friendship, life and death .It was the worst of times yet I know God was in control.
I was saddened by the turn of events, but I was thankful God allowed me to be part of her life, even for a brief moment in time. I was there for her when she needed me for support. Why me or why any of us? I believe God demands our best and he has placed in everyone the ability to help those in need using our natural God-given gifts.
